Just shy of an hour away from downtown Ciudad de Panama, lies this rumored mountain paradise where temperatures rarely exceed 75°F–24°C. Cerro Azul, Panama, is, indeed, a world away from the hustle and bustle of the capital city. Perched 2,500 feet above sea level, the air is cooler, the views are remarkable and expansive and the peace and natural beauty are next level. There’s something magical about life above the clouds in Panama. Whether you’re a nature enthusiast, adventure seeker, or simply looking to escape the tropical heat, Cerro Azul, Panama is a world away, offering an unexpected side of Panama that most tourists never see.
I kind of lucked into this adventure, to be honest. Being the good Samaritan that I am, I agreed to help a local high school student complete his English project about Plaza Bolivar while walking one day in Casco Viejo. In a show of gratitude, his father offered me a trip up to Cerro Azul where they are living out a happy retirement. I decided I’d make a day of it and invite my favorite hiking friends.
HIKING IN CERRO AZUL
As we approached the gated community, our guide, Mario, turned off the AC and let the windows down in the car. To our surprise, the air we felt was so cool and pleasant and the smell was amazing. At 762 meters in altitude, Cerro Azul is a welcome reprieve from sticky downtown Panamá.
Our first stop was a riverside trail. Oddly, as we walked through woods, I felt like I was hiking in the US again surrounded by wispy pines and multiple waterfalls on the Antioquia trail. We stopped and took pictures, marveling at the weather, crystal clear water and the tranquility.

BIRDWATCHING
Cerro Azul isn’t just known for it’s lovely weather, it’s also known as a birder’s paradise with an estimated 400 different species making their home in this lovely enclave. From tanagers to toucans and hummingbirds to hawks, the avian rainbow is is on full display here. We were greeted by a gorgeous trio of red, yellow and blue tanagers at Hacienda La Montañita Restaurant. During our lunch serious birders came in and out of the restaurant with giant lenses and lists ready to check off all of their sightings. If birding is your passion, you certainly need to add Cerro Azul to your list.

INCREDIBLE VIEWS
Finally, those incredible mountain views! It was quite the adventure making our way up the slippery mountain road in the 4×4 fishtailing our way to the top. As we approached the summit, we marveled at crazy trees and uniquely tropical vegetation. Lone palms and banks of ferns greeted us along the way. When we made it to the summit, we couldn’t believe the scenery. Looking out toward Darien, the city and the Caribbean side of the isthmus.

They come for the proximity to the capital, while still being able to enjoy the serenity of this unique mountain enclave. As we meandered through the system of unpaved roads, our guide pointed out houses belonging to locals and expats from across the globe.
