10 REASONS YOU MUST GO TO CASCO PEATONAL

Events around the city can be somewhat sporadic and unpredictable with very little publicity put out beforehand. However, during the past few months the Alcaldía de Panamá has put together a monthly event that’s kind of spectacular with a little something for everyone, Casco Peatonal. On the last Sunday of every month head over to the streets of Casco to check out the growing schedule of events. This explosion of Panamanian culture is everything: dance, music, food and drink, artisanry and more. Taking place in plazas across the Spanish Colonial part of town, this action-packed day begins at 8 am and keeps going until well past sundown. Here are just a few of the reasons you must go to Casco Peatonal.

1. ICONS OF PANAMANIAN CULTURE

Panamá loves showing off her beautiful culture that comes in every color of the rainbow. Young women in polleras, congo queens, and folkloric dancers grace the cobblestone streets of Casco with their presence. They are more than a photo-op, they are an experience.

2. SHOPPING

Local vendors offering unique items including everything from the funky stickers to super-cool, thrifted finds, beautiful Wounaan baskets and colorful molas. I found a cute little market tucked away in Santa Ana, where locals were selling books, jewelry, used clothing, cinnamon rolls, fresh juices and trinkets. It’s a great place to find something different and support the local economy.

3. LIVE MUSIC

Young, talented musicians hoping to make a name for themselves on the PTY scene grace the stages of the Peatonal. Plaza Herrera is a great place to catch a great band belting out covers of everything from Bad Bunny to the Cranberries.

4. MIXOLOGY

Nothing hits the spot on a sticky, hot Panamanian day like a freshly made mojito or margarita. Mixologists set up shop in the squares of Casco bringing their best recipes with them. Check out one of many kiosks offering drink specials that will keep you and your friends cool.

5. THE RHYTHMS OF SALSA

Salseros fill Plaza de la Independencia by the hundreds dancing to the classic cantantes like Marc Anthony and Celia Cruz. This is definitely one of my favorite parts of Casco Peatonal, because everyone knows life is better with a little salsa.

6.DJs KEEP THE STREET PARTY GOING

DJs hit the calles outside of local bars pumping out the music that keeps the party vibe vibing for hours on end. As the sun set and I made my way home through the streets of Casco, this epic street party showed no signs of stopping–true Panamá.

7. DRUMS GALORE

No Panamanian party is complete without the intoxicating, ever-present rhythms of the drums. Whether you’re celebrating Fiestas Patrias or Carnaval, drums are an essential part of any shindig here. This monthly event does not disappoint. Check the schedule of events for the best place to listen to the lively sounds of local drummers.

8. INDIGENOUS CULTURE

Panama’s indigenous cultures are so fascinating. From the Comarcas of Guna Yala to Emberá-Wounaan, the first Panamanians are so proud of their traditions that make this little nation unique. They delight in keeping their heritage alive and sharing with visitors who want to get a glimpse into their customs that have stood the test of time.

9. FOOD

No street festival is complete without food. Check out kiosks scattered throughout the neighborhoods and squares of Casco Viejo and Santa Ana where you’ll find a little bit of everything: asados, raspado, empanadas, salchipapas and more. El Mercado de San Felipe Neri is a great spot to check out for special events and gastronomic surprises as well.
